Pokemon Diamond / Pearl Abilities Guide Last updated 1-4-08 By R2 ========================================================================== ========================================================================== Everyone loves Serebii.net, but information there is often inaccurate. Smogon generally gets it right thanks to their terrifyingly-thorough research, but good luck finding it in any organized manner. I hope to combine accuracy and readability here. As you read, the term "holder" means "The Pokemon that's has the ability in question". It's a lot shorter. Effects that occur outside of battle only work if the user is the first Pokemon in your party, with the exceptions of Flame Body and Magma Armor. The Pokemon in the first slot can be fainted and the overworld effects will still function -- try it with CompoundEyes to provoke wild Pokemon into holding items while the second Pokemon in your party has Frisk and Thief. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- A Note on Numeric Increases: Some abilities affect the stats of Pokemon in battle. In all cases these last until the affected Pokemon switches out. If a boost is listed as a numerical addition or subtraction (+2, -1), the ability works on the same scale as moves like Swords Dance, Bulk Up, or Amnesia. Generally each +1 is a 50% boost to stats, and the maximum is +6. -1 reduces the stat to 2/3 of its original value, -2 to half, and additional penalties reduce it further. The minimum is -6, leaving the stat at 25% its original value. Other abilities grant percentage bonuses. These do not work on the same scale and stack with the numerical bonuses described above. For example, a Pokemon using Agility three times is at Speed +6, because Agility boosts Speed by +2 each time it is used. This makes the Pokemon's Speed four times what it is normally. If the Pokemon then activates the Swift Swim ability, its current speed increases by 100%. This doubles the current value, making its Speed eight times the normal statistic score. ========================================================================== ========================================================================== Abilities: Adaptability Users: Eevee, Porygon-Z When the holder uses a move for which it gains a Same-Type Attack Bonus, the bonus is 2x instead of 1.5x. Aftermath Users: Drifloon/Drifblim, Stunky/Skuntank If the holder is attacked with a move that makes contact and faints, the Pokemon that fainted it loses hit points equal to 25% of its maximum. Air Lock Users: Rayquaza While Air Lock does not end weather effects, it suppresses the benefits of weather effects while the holder remains in battle. Namely: Sunlight no longer boosts Fire-type attacks. Rain no longer boosts Water-type attacks; Thunder has its usual lackluster accuracy. Sandstorm no longer damages Pokemon at the end of each turn, and does not grant Rock-types a boost to Special Defense. Hail no longer damages Pokemon at the end of each turn, and does not boost the accuracy of Blizzard. In all weather effects, Solarbeam is power 120 and requires one turn of charging to activate. Anger Point Users: Mankey/Primeape, Tauros The user's Attack is boosted to +6 if the user is struck by a critical hit. Anger Point will activate if a Substitute is critically hit. Anticipation Users: Barboach/Whiscash, Wormadam, Croagunk/Toxicroak When the user enters battle, it will "shudder" if an opponent knows a move that would be super-effective on the user, Explosion, or Selfdestruct. If the opponent knows Hidden Power or Natural Gift, Anticipation will not activate even if those moves would be super-effective against the user. Arena Trap Users: Diglett/Dugtrio, Trapinch The opponent may not switch out so long as the user is in play. Pokemon that are Flying-type or have the Levitate ability ignore Arena Trap, unless the move Gravity has been used or the opponent is holding an Iron Ball. Any Pokemon may switch out in spite of Arena Trap by holding the Shed Shell item or using the moves Baton Pass or U-Turn. Outside of battle, encounters with wild Pokemon are twice as likely. Bad Dreams Users: Darkrai If any of the user's opponents are asleep, the opponent loses hit points equal to 12.5% of its maximum each turn it remains asleep. Battle Armor Users: Kabuto/Kabutops, Anorinth/Armaldo, Skorupi/Drapion No move can score a critical hit against the user. Blaze Users: Charmander/Charmeleon/Charizard, Cyndaquil/Quilava/Typhlosion, Torchic/Combusken/Blaziken, Chimchar/Monferno/Infernape When the user's HP are at 33% or less, the power of any Fire-type moves it uses is increased by 50%. Chlorophyll Users: Oddish/Gloom/Vileplume/Bellossom, Bellsprout/Weepinbell/ Victreebel, Exeggcute/Exeggutor, Tangela/Tangrowth, Hoppip/Skiploom/Jumpluff, Sunkern/Sunflora, Seedot/Nuzleaf/Shiftry, Tropius, Cherubi If the user is in play while the sunlight weather effect is active, the user's Speed increases by 100%. Clear Body Users: Tentacool/Tentacruel, Beldum/Metang/Metagross, Regirock, Regice, Registeel The opponent cannot drop the user's stats via moves or abilities. The Pokemon is immune to Intimidate, for example, and the opponent cannot lower the user's Attack by using Growl or Featherdance. The opponent may boost the user's stats via moves like Swagger. The user may drop its own stats by using moves like Curse or Superpower. The user is affected normally by Power Swap, Guard Swap, and Heart Swap. Cloud Nine Users: Psyduck/Golduck While Cloud Nine does not end weather effects, it suppresses the benefits of weather effects while the holder remains in battle. Color Change Users: Kecleon When the user is hit with a move that does damage, the user's type will change to that of the move that hit it. CompoundEyes Users: Butterfree, Venonat, Yanma, Nincada All of the user's moves have their accuracy increased by 30%. For example, an accuracy 50 move will have its accuracy boosted to 63. Outside of battle, wild Pokemon are more likely to hold items. Cute Charm Users: Cleffa/Clefairy/Clefable, Igglybuff/Jigglypuff/Wigglytuff, Skitty/Delcatty, Lopunny When an opponent uses a move that makes physical contact with the user, there is a 30% chance the opponent will be Attracted to the user. Outside of battle, the chances of meeting wild Pokemon of the opposite gender of the user is 66%, regardless of normal gender biases. Swarming Pokemon are not affected. Damp Users: Psyduck/Golduck, Poliwag/Poliwhirl/Poliwrath/Politoed, Wooper/Quagsire When the user is in play, no Pokemon may use the moves Selfdestruct or Explosion. Download Users: Porygon, Porygon2, Porygon-Z When the user enters play, its opponent's Defense and Special Defense are compared with one another. If Defense is higher, the user gets a +1 boost to its Special Attack. If Special Defense is higher, the user gets a +1 boost to its Attack. (Therefore, it gets a boost to exploit the opponent's weaker stat.) If Defense and Special Defense are equal, the user gets a +1 boost to Attack or Special Attack, depending on which of its own stats is higher. Drizzle Users: Kyogre When the user enters play, the weather effect switches to rain. The rain continues until another weather effect replaces it. Drought Users: Groudon When the user enters play, the weather effect switches to sun. The sun continues until another weather effect replaces it. Dry Skin Users: Paras/Parasect, Croagunk/Toxicroak If the weather effect is rain, the user regains 12.5% of its maximum HP each turn. If the weather effect is sun, the user loses 12.5% of its maximum HP each turn. If the user is hit by a Water-type attack, it recovers 25% of its hit points. Fire-type attacks do an extra 25% damage. (Yes, this means a Dry Skin Parasect takes quintuple damage from any Fire-type move.) Early Bird Users: Doduo/Dodrio, Kangaskhan, Ledyba/Ledian, Natu/Xatu, Girafarig, Houndour/Houndoom, Seedot/Nuzleaf/Shiftry Sleep effects are halved in duration. This includes self-inflicted sleep, as from Rest. Effect Spore Users: Paras/Parasect, Shroomish/Breloom When an opponent uses a move that makes physical contact with the user, there is a 30% chance the opponent will be afflicted by a status ailment. The ailment is randomly chosen from Sleep, Poison, or Paralysis, with equal probability. Filter Users: Mime Jr./Mr. Mime When an opponent hits the user with a move that is super-effective, the move does 25% less damage than it normally would. Flame Body Users: Magby/Magmar/Magmortar, Slugma/Magcargo When an opponent uses a move that makes physical contact with the user, there is a 30% chance the opponent will be Burned. Outside of battle, it takes fewer steps to hatch an egg. Steps needed are approximately but not precisely halved. Flash Fire Users: Vulpix/Ninetales, Growlithe/Arcanine, Ponyta/Rapidash, Flareon, Houndour/Houndoom, Heatran The user is immune to Fire-type moves, including Will-o-Wisp. If the user is hit by a Fire-type move, the power of all of the user's Fire-type moves is increased by 50%. Flower Gift Users: Cherrim When the weather effect is sun, the user's Attack and Special Defense increase by 100%. If the user is in a 2v2 battle, its ally also doubles its Attack and Special Defense. Forecast Users: Castform The user becomes Fire-type in sunny weather, Water-type in rain, and Ice-type in hail. There is no change in a sandstorm or fog. If the user loses this ability through Skill Swap or it is supressed by Gastro Acid, the user is stuck in its current form until it switches out. Forewarn Users: Drowzee/Hypno, Smoochum/Jynx All of the opponents' moves are compared. You are notified which one has the highest base power. If two moves have the same base power, one is picked at random. For the purposes of this move, Fissure, Guillotine, Horn Drill, and Sheer Cold are power 160. Counter, Mirror Coat, and Metal Burst are power 120. Crush Grip, Dragon Rage, Endeavor, Flail, Frustration, Grass Knot, Gyro Ball, Hidden Power, Low Kick, Natural Gift, Night Shade, Psywave, Return, Reversal, Seismic Toss, Sonicboom, Trump Card, and Wring Out are power 80. Any other move without a listed power is considered power 0. Frisk Users: Stantler, Shuppet/Banette When the user enters battle, you are told what item is held by one opponent. You are not told which opponent holds the item in a 2v2 battle. Gluttony Users: Shuckle, Zigzagoon/Linoone If the user is holding a berry that activates when HP is below 25%, the berry activates when HP is below 50% instead. Guts Users: Rattata/Raticate, Machop/Machoke/Machamp, Heracross, Ursaring, Tyrogue, Larvitar, Taillow/Swellow, Makuhita/Hariyama When the user is afflicted with a Burn, Paralysis, Poison, or Sleep status, its Attack increases by 50%. The Burn status effect does not drop the user's Attack like it usually does. (Yes, Guts functions through Sleep -- try a Sleep Talk Heracross sometime. Presumably it works through Freeze, too, but good luck testing that.) Heatproof Users: Bronzor, Bronzong Damage from Fire-type moves is reduced by half. Burn status does 1/16 maximum HP damage per turn, rather than 1/8. Honey Gather Users: Combee After a battle, the user may be holding Honey if it was not holding an item at the end of the battle. Huge Power Users: Azurill/Marill/Azumarill In battle, the user's Attack increases 100%. Hustle Users: Togepi/Togetic/Togekiss, Corsola, Remoraid, Delibird Damage from the user's physical attacks is increased by 50%, but the accuracy of those moves drops by 20%. Outside of battle, when you encounter a wild Pokemon, it will be the highest level possible for the area you're in. For example, if an area has wild Pikachus at levels 16 and 18, you'll find level 18 Pikachus. Hydration Users: Seel/Dewgong, Phione, Manaphy At the end of each turn, if the weather effect is rain, the user recovers from Burn, Sleep, Poison, Paralysis, or Freeze status. Hyper Cutter Users: Krabby/Kingler, Pinsir, Gligar/Gliscor, Mawile, Trapinch, Corphish/Crawdaunt Like Clear Body, but only prevents drops to the Attack stat. Opponents may not lower the user's Attack through moves or abilities, but may raise it with Swagger. The user may lower its own attack by using moves like Superpower. If the Pokemon knows the move Cut and uses it outside of battle to clear tall grass, it removes grass in a radius of two panels instead of one. Ice Body Users: Snorunt/Glalie, Spheal/Sealeo/Walrein If the weather is hail, the user recovers 1/16 of its maximum HP at the end of each turn. Illuminate Users: Staryu/Starmie, Chinchou/Lanturn, Volbeat Outside of battle, you will encounter wild Pokemon twice as often. Immunity Users: Snorlax, Zangoose The user is immune to the Poison status effect. Inner Focus Users: Zubat/Golbat/Crobat, Abra/Kadabra/Alakazam, Farfetch'd, Dragonite, Girafarig, Sneasel, Snorunt/Glalie, Riolu/Lucario The user will not flinch if hit with a move that causes flinching. The user will still lose its focus if it tries to use Focus Punch and takes damage. Insomnia Users: Drowzee/Hypno, Hoothoot/Noctowl, Spinarak/Ariados, Murkrow/Honchkrow, Shuppet/Banette The user is immune to Sleep status. It cannot use the move Rest. Intimidate Users: Ekans/Arbok, Growlithe/Arcanine, Tauros, Gyarados, Snubbull/Granbull, Stantler, Hitmontop, Mightyena, Masquerain, Mawile, Salamence, Staravia/Staraptor, Shinx/Luxio/Luxray When the user enters battle, all opponents suffer a -1 Attack drop. Outside of battle, the encounter rate with wild Pokemon is halved. Iron Fist Users: Hitmonchan The power of the moves Bullet Punch, Comet Punch, Drain Punch, Fire Punch, Focus Punch, Ice Punch, Mach Punch, Mega Punch, Sky Uppercut, and ThunderPunch is increased by 20%. Keen Eye Users: Pidgey/Pidgetto/Pidgeot, Spearow/Fearow, Farfetch'd, Hitmonchan, Sentret/Furret, Hoothoot/Noctowl, Sneasel, Skarmory, Wingull/Pelipper, Sableye, Starly, Chatot The user's Accuracy cannot be dropped. Klutz Users: Buneary/Lopunny The user cannot utilize any benefits of and is immune to drawbacks from its hold item. Leaf Guard Users: Tangela/Tangrowth, Hoppip/Skiploom/Jumpluff, Leafeon At the end of each turn, if the weather effect is sun, the user recovers from Burn, Sleep, Poison, Paralysis, or Freeze status. Levitate Users: Gastly/Haunter/Gengar, Koffing/Weezing, Misdreavus/Mismagius, Unown, Vibrava/Flygon, Lunatone, Solrock, Baltoy/Claydol, Duskull, Chingling/Chimecho, Latias, Latios, Bronzor/Bronzong, Carnivine, Rotom, Uxie, Mespirit, Azelf, Cresselia The user is unaffected by Ground-type moves, Spikes, Toxic Spikes, and the Arena Trap ability. Suppressed by the moves Gravity and Ingrain. Lightningrod Users: Cubone/Marowak, Rhyhorn/Rhydon/Rhyperior, Electrike/Manectric All Electric-type moves, including those from the user's ally in 2v2, hit the user. Considering Marowak and Rhyperior are Ground-type and thus immune, that's not exactly a bad thing. Limber Users: Persian, Hitmonlee, Ditto, Glameow The user is immune to Paralysis. Liquid Ooze Users: Tentacool/Tentacruel, Gulpin/Swalot Hitting the user with Absorb, Drain Punch, Giga Drain, Leech Life, Mega Drain, Dream Eater, and Leech Seed cause the enemy to lose HP equal to the amount they would have gained. Magic Guard Users: Cleffa/Clefairy/Clefable Only direct attack damage will decrease this Pokemon's HP. This grants immunity to Spikes, Stealth Rock, Nightmare, Bad Dreams, Hail, Sandstorm, and the damage from Burn and Poison status effects. The Attack drop from the Burn status effect still applies. Leech Seed does no damage and does not heal the opponent who used it. Magic Guard prevents recoil damage from moves that do recoil damage and moves powered by the Life Orb, but does not block recoil damage from Struggle. Magma Armor Users: Slugma/Magcargo, Camerupt The Pokemon is immune to the Freeze status effect. Outside of battles, eggs take fewer steps to hatch. The number of steps required is approximately but not precisely halved. Magnet Pull Users: Magnemite/Magneton/Magnezone, Nosepass/Probopass While the user is in play, Steel-type opponents cannot switch out of battle. Opponents may switch out with the Shed Shell or by using Baton Pass or U-Turn. Outside of battle, encounters with wild Steel-type Pokemon are more likely. Marvel Scale Users: Milotic When the user is afflicted with a Burn, Paralysis, Poison, Sleep, or Freeze status, its Defense increases by 50%. Minus Users: Minun If the user's partner in a 2v2 battle has the Plus ability, the user's Special Attack increases by 50%. Mold Breaker Users: Pinsir, Cranidos/Rampardos The user may use moves on an opponent even if the opponent has an ability that would normally nullify the move. Namely: - Opponents with Battle Armor may be critically hit. - The user can drop stats of an opponent with Clear Body. - The user may Selfdestruct or Explosion in the presence of a Pokemon with Damp. - Pokemon with Dry Skin take damage from Water-type moves and no additional damage from Fire-type moves. - Filter does not protect from the user's super-effective moves. - Opponents with Flash Fire are damaged by the user's Fire-type moves. - The Special Defense increase from Flower Gift is nullified. - Opponents with Heatproof take full damage from the user's Fire-type moves. - The user may drop the Attack stat of Pokemon with Hyper Cutter. - Opponents with Immunity may be Poisoned. - Opponents with Inner Focus may be flinched. - Opponents with Insomnia may be put to Sleep. - The user may drop the Accuracy of opponents with Keen Eye. - Opponents with Levitate may be hit with Ground-type moves. - The user may target anyone he pleases with an Electric-type move while a Pokemon with Lightningrod is in play. - Opponents with Limber may be Paralyzed. - The user may Freeze opponents with Magma Armor. - The Defense increase from Marvel Scale is nullified. - The user may use Electric-type moves to hit opponents with Motor Drive to no ill effect. - The user may infatuate opponents with Oblivious. - The user may confuse opponents with Own Tempo. - The user will not miss due to an opponent's Sand Veil. - Opponents with Shell Armor may be critically hit. - Opponents with Shield Dust can be hit with status effects. - Opponents with Simple get regular stat boosts/drops. - The user will not miss due to an opponent's Snow Cloak. - Solid Rock does not protect against the user's super-effective moves. - Opponents with Soundproof may be hit by the user's sonic moves. - The user can Knock Off or otherwise manipulate an opponent's item in spite of the opponent's Sticky Hold. - The user may target anyone he pleases with a Water-type move while a Pokemon with Storm Drain is in play. - The user may Roar or Whirlwind away an opponent with Suction Cups. - The user will not miss due to an opponent's Tangled Feet. - Opponents with Thick Fat take full damage from the user's Fire-type and Ice-type moves. - The user may retain numeric stat changes when facing an opponent with Unaware. - Opponents with Vital Spirit may be put to sleep. - Opponents with Volt Absorb take normal damage from Electric-type moves. - Opponents with Water Absorb take normal damage from Water-type moves. - Opponents with Water Veil may be Burned. - The user can drop stats of an opponent with White Smoke. - The user can hit an opponent with Wonder Guard with any moves he likes. Reports indicate that Leaf Guard is affected, but that Hydration is not. Either way I'm not sure how. Motor Drive Users: Electivire When the user is hit with an Electric-type move (including Thunder Wave), the move increases the user's Speed by +1 instead of its normal effect. Multitype Users: Arceus When the Pokemon holds one of the myriad plate items, its type changes to that boosted by the plate. Even if the item held is not a Plate, the user's item cannot be Knocked Off; Tricked or Switcherooed away, or stolen with Thief or Covet. This ability cannot be switched with Skill Swap. Natural Cure Users: Happiny/Chansey/Blissey, Staryu/Starmie, Corsola, Celebi, Budew/Roselia/Roserade, Swablu/Altaria, Shaymin When the user switches out of play, any Burn, Sleep, Freeze, Paralyze, or Poison status is cured. No Guard Users: Machop/Machoke/Machamp The user cannot miss. Opponents cannot miss the user. Thus all moves will hit in spite of the move's base accuracy, Evasion or Accuracy modifiers, Detect, Protect, Bounce, Dig, Dive, or Fly. Moves that ignore accuracy modifiers -- including Fissure, Guillotine, Horn Drill, and Sheer Cold -- cannot hit through Protect or Detect. Normalize Users: Skitty/Delcatty All of the user's moves are Normal-type. Normal-type users get STAB on all moves. Oblivious Users: Slowpoke/Slowbro/Slowking, Lickitung/Lickilicky, Smoochum/Jynx, Swinub/Piloswine/Mamoswine, Illumise, Wailmer/Wailord, Numel, Barboach/Whiscash The user is immune to the attraction status effect. Overgrow Users: Bulbasaur/Ivysaur/Venusaur, Chikorita/Bayleef/Meganium, Treecko/Grovyle/Sceptile, Turtwig/Grotle/Torterra When the user's HP are at 33% or less, the power of any Grass-type moves it uses is increased by 50%. Own Tempo Users: Slowpoke/Slowbro/Slowking, Lickitung/Lickilicky, Smeargle, Spoink/Grumpig, Spinda, Glameow/Purugly The user is immune to the confusion status effect. Pickup Users: Meowth, Aipom/Ambipom, Teddiursa, Phanpy, Zigzagoon/Linoone, Pachirisu, Munchlax After a battle, the user may be holding an item if it was not holding an item at the end of the battle. Which item is found is determined partially by chance and partially by the user's experience level. Here's a chart of probabilities: Levels 1–10: Levels 11–20: Levels 21-30: Potion 30% Antidote 30% Super Potion 30% Antidote 10% Super Potion 10% Great Ball 10% Super Potion 10% Great Ball 10% Repel 10% Great Ball 10% Repel 10% Escape Rope 10% Repel 10% Escape Rope 10% Full Heal 10% Escape Rope 10% Full Heal 10% Hyper Potion 10% Full Heal 10% Hyper Potion 10% Ultra Ball 10% Hyper Potion 5% Ultra Ball 5% Revive 5% Ultra Ball 3% Revive 3% Rare Candy 3% Revive 1% Nugget 1% King's Rock 1% Nugget 1% King's Rock 1% Full Restore 1% Levels 31–40: Levels 41–50: Levels 51–60: Great Ball 30% Repel 30% Escape Rope 30% Repel 10% Escape Rope 10% Full Heal 10% Escape Rope 10% Full Heal 10% Hyper Potion 10% Full Heal 10% Hyper Potion 10% Ultra Ball 10% Hyper Potion 10% Ultra Ball 10% Revive 10% Ultra Ball 10% Revive 10% Rare Candy 10% Revive 10% Rare Candy 10% Dusk Stone 10% Rare Candy 5% Dusk Stone 5% Shiny Stone 5% Dusk Stone 3% Shiny Stone 3% Dawn Stone 3% Full Restore 1% Ether 1% White Herb 1% Ether 1% White Herb 1% TM 44 1% Levels 61–70: Levels 71–80: Levels 81–90: Full Heal 30% Hyper Potion 30% Ultra Ball 30% Shiny Stone 10% Ultra Ball 10% Revive 10% Hyper Potion 10% Revive 10% Rare Candy 10% Ultra Ball 10% Rare Candy 10% Dusk Stone 10% Revive 10% Dusk Stone 10% Shiny Stone 10% Rare Candy 10% Shiny Stone 10% Dawn Stone 10% Dusk Stone 10% Dawn Stone 10% Full Restore 10% Dawn Stone 5% Full Restore 5% Max Revive 5% Full Restore 3% Max Revive 3% PP Up 3% TM 44 1% Elixir 1% TM01 1% Elixir 1% TM 01 1% Leftovers 1% Levels 91–100: Revive 30% Rare Candy 10% Dusk Stone 10% Shiny Stone 10% Dawn Stone 10% Full Restore 10% Max Revive 10% PP Up 5% Max Elixir 3% Leftovers 1% TM26 1% Plus Users: Plusle If the user's partner in a 2v2 battle has the Minus ability, the user's Special Attack increases by 50%. Poison Heal Users: Shroomish/Breloom When the user is Poisoned, the user gains 1/8 of its maximum HP each turn instead of losing HP to the poison effect. Poison Point Users: Nidoran Male/Nidorino/Nidoking, Nidoran Female/Nidorina/Nidoqueen Seadra, Qwilfish, Budew/Roselia/Roserade When an opponent uses a move that makes physical contact with the user, there is a 30% chance the opponent will be Poisoned. Pressure Users: Aerodactyl, Articuno, Zapdos, Moltres, Mewtwo, Raikou, Entei, Suicune, Lugia, Ho-oh, Dusclops/Dusknoir, Absol, Deoxys, Vespiquen, Spiritomb, Weavile, Dialga, Palkia, Giratina Moves that affect the user lose one extra PP per turn. Outside of battle, encounters with wild Pokemon become more frequent. Pure Power Users: Meditite/Medicham In battle, the user's Attack increases 100%. Quick Feet Users: Granbull, Teddiursa/Ursaring, Poochyena/Mightyena When the user is afflicted with a Burn, Paralysis, Poison, Sleep, or Freeze status, its Speed increases by 50%. Rain Dish Users: Lotad/Lombre/Ludicolo If the weather effect is rain, the user recovers 1/16 of its maximum HP each turn. Reckless Users: Hitmonlee When the user uses a move that causes recoil, including Jump Kick or Hi Jump Kick, the move's power increases by 20%. Life Orb does not trigger this bonus. Rivalry Users: Nidoran Male/Nidorino/Nidoking, Nidoran Female/Nidorina/Nidoqueen Shinx/Luxio/Luxray When the user attacks a Pokemon of the same gender, the power of its moves increases by 25%. When the user attacks a Pokemon of the opposite gender, the power of its moves is decreased 25%. There is no change if the user or the target has no gender. Rock Head Users: Geodude/Graveler/Golem, Onix/Steelix, Cubone/Marowak, Rhyhorn/Rhydon, Aerodactyl, Bonsly/Sudowoodo, Aron/Lairon/Aggron, Relicanth, Bagon/Shelgon The user does not take recoil damage from moves that normally cause it. Does not block recoil from Struggle or moves powered by Life Orb. Rough Skin Users: Carvanha/Sharpedo When an opponent uses a move that makes physical contact with the user, the opponent takes 12.5% of its maximum HP in damage. Run Away Users: Rattata/Raticate, Ponyta/Rapidash, Doduo/Dodrio, Eevee, Sentret/Furret, Aipom, Dunsparce, Snubbull, Poochyena, Pachirisu, Buneary The user may flee from battles with wild Pokemon regardless of the level or Speed of the Pokemon it is running from. Users affected by Block, Mean Look, Spider Web, Shadow Tag, or Arena Trap cannot flee. The user still cannot flee from trainer battles. In Wi-Fi matches, where the player can flee at will, this ability is useless. Sand Stream Users: Tyranitar, Hippopotas/Hippowdon When the user enters play, the weather effect switches to sandstorm. The sandstorm continues until another weather effect replaces it. Sand Veil Users: Sandshrew/Sandslash, Diglett/Dugtrio, Gligar/Gliscor, Cacnea/Cacturne, Gible/Gabite/Garchomp If the weather effect is sandstorm, the user's evasion increases by 20%. Scrappy Users: Kangaskhan, Miltank The user may hit Ghost-type targets with Normal-type and Fighting-type moves. Serene Grace Users: Happiny/Chansey/Blissey, Togepi/Togetic/Togekiss, Dunsparce, Jirachi When the user uses a move that has a chance at an added effect, such as Blizzard's chance to Freeze the opponent or Silver Wind's chance to raise all the user's stats by +1, the chance of that effect triggering is doubled. Does not work with e.g. the flinch chance from holding a King's Rock. Shadow Tag Users: Wynaut/Wobbuffet Opponents may not switch out unless they also have the ability Shadow Tag. Baton Pass, U-Turn, and holding a Shed Shell allow switching in spite of Shadow Tag. Shed Skin Users: Metapod, Kakuna, Ekans/Arbok, Dratini/Dragonair, Pupitar, Silcoon, Cascoon, Seviper, Kricketot, Burmy The user has a 30% chance to recover from Burn, Paralyze, Poison, Sleep, or Freeze status at the end of each turn. Shell Armor Users: Shellder/Cloyster, Krabby/Kingler, Lapras, Omanyte/Omastar, Corphish/Crawdaunt, Clamperl No move can score a critical hit against the user. Shield Dust Users: Caterpie, Weedle, Venomoth, Wurmple/Dustox If the user is hit with an attack that normally carries a secondary effect, like Rock Slide's chance to force a flinch, the secondary effect will never occur. Simple Users: Numel, Bidoof/Bibarel Whenever the user has a numeric boost or drop to its stats, that boost or drop counts double. For example, Defense Curl normally boosts Defense by +1. When used by a Pokemon with Simple, it counts as +2 as long as the user remains in play. Since no boost counts for anything above +6, a Pokemon with Simple can maximize its stats at only +3. Thus, any boost held by a Pokemon with Simple doesn't count after +4. Simple will double the effective boosts gained from Baton Pass, but these boosts return to normal if the user Baton Passes to another Pokemon. Skill Link Users: Shellder/Cloyster Whenever the user uses a move that hits 2-5 times, it always hits five times. Slow Start Users: Regigigas When the user is switched in, its Attack and Speed are cut by 50% for five turns. Sniper Users: Horsea/Seadra/Kingdra, Remoraid/Octillery, Skorupi/Drapion When the user scores a critical hit, damage is tripled instead of doubled. Snow Cloak Users: Swinub/Piloswine/Mamoswine, Glaceon, Frosslass If the weather effect is hail, the user's evasion increases by 20%. Snow Warning Users: Snover/Abomasnow When the user enters play, the weather effect switches to hail. The hail continues until another weather effect replaces it. Solar Power Users: Sunkern/Sunflora, Tropius When the weather effect is sun, the user loses 1/8 of its maximum HP each turn, but its Special Attack is boosted by 50%. Solid Rock Users: Camerupt, Rhyperior When an opponent hits the user with a move that is super-effective, the move does 25% less damage than it normally would. Soundproof Users: Voltorb/Electrode, Mime Jr./Mr. Mime, Whismur/Loudred/Exploud The user is unaffected by the moves Grasswhistle, Growl, Hyper Voice, Metal Sound, Roar, Sing, Sonicboom, Supersonic, Screech, Snore, Uproar, Roar Of Time, Bug Buzz, Chatter, and Heal Bell. Perish Song still gives the Pokemon a Perish Count, but the Pokemon is unaffected by the count. If the user uses Baton Pass, the Pokemon that switches in will inherit the user's Perish Count as usual. Speed Boost Users: Yanma/Yanmega, Ninjask At the end of each turn, the user gets a +1 boost to Speed. Stall Users: Sableye The user's moves have their priority lowered by -1. Thus, the user generally moves last every turn, regardless of Speed. The effects of Lagging Tail or Full Incense trump Stall: an opponent holding either item moves after the user, and Stall is ignored if the user holds one of those items. The user moves last like usual in a Trick Room. Static Users: Pichu/Pikachu/Raichu, Voltorb/Electrode, Elekid/Electabuzz, Mareep/Flaaffy/Ampharos, Electrike/Manectric When an opponent uses a move that makes physical contact with the user, there is a 30% chance the opponent will be Paralyzed. Outside of battle, you are more likely to encounter Electric-type Pokemon. Steadfast Users: Tyrogue, Riolu/Lucario, Gallade If the user flinches, it gets a +1 Speed boost. Stench Users: Grimer/Muk, Stunky/Skuntank Outside of battle, you encounter fewer wild Pokemon. The higher the user's level, the fewer wild Pokemon you encounter. Sticky Hold Users: Grimer/Muk, Gulpin/Swalot, Shellos/Gastrodon If the opponent uses a move that would remove the user's item, including Covet, Knock Off, Thief, Trick, or Switcheroo, the user's item is not removed. The user can still shed its own item by using Fling or Natural Gift. Outside of battle, fishing becomes more likely to succeed. Storm Drain Users: Shellos/Gastrodon, Finneon/Lumineon All Water-type moves, including those from the user's ally in 2v2, hit the user. Sturdy Users: Geodude/Graveler/Golem, Magnemite/Magneton/Magnezone, Onix/Steelix, Bonsly/Sudowoodo, Pineco/Forretress, Shuckle, Skarmory, Donphan, Nosepass/Probopass, Aron/Lairon/Aggron, Shieldon/Bastiodon The user cannot be fainted by one-hit KO moves. Suction Cups Users: Octillery, Lileep/Cradily The user cannot be forced to switch due to Roar or Whirlwind. Outside of battle, fishing becomes more likely to succeed. Super Luck Users: Murkrow/Honchkrow, Absol The user's critical hit chance is increased by +1. Swarm Users: Beedrill, Scyther/Scizor, Ledyba/Ledian, Spinarak/Ariados, Heracross, Beautifly, Volbeat, Kricketune, Mothim When the user's HP are at 33% or less, the power of any Bug-type moves it uses is increased by 50%. Outside of battle, the occasional cry of a wild Pokemon can be heard more often. Swift Swim Users: Seadra/Kingdra, Goldeen/Seaking, Magikarp, Omanyte/Omastar, Kabuto/Kabutops, Qwilfish, Mantyke/Mantine, Lotad/Lombre/Ludicolo, Surksit, Feebas, Huntail, Gorebyss, Relicanth, Luvdisc, Buizel/Floatzel, Finneon/Lumineon If the weather effect is rain, the user's Speed increases 100%. Synchronize Users: Abra/Kadabra/Alakazam, Mew, Xatu/Natu, Espeon, Umbreon, Ralts/Kirlia/Gardevoir If an opponent uses a move that causes Burn, Paralysis, or Poison status on the user, the opponent is also inflicted with Burn, Paralysis, or Poison status. Intense Poison (as from Toxic) is passed back as regular Poison. Outside of battle, any Pokemon encountered in the wild has a 50% chance to have the same nature as the user. Tangled Feet Users: Pidgey/Pidgeotto/Pidgeot, Chatot Whenever the user is afflicted with confusion status, its Evasion increases 50%. Technician Users: Meowth/Persian, Scyther/Scizor, Smeargle, Hitmontop, Ambipom If the user uses a move with base power of 60 or less, the damage from the move is increased by 50%. STAB, type-based effectiveness modifiers, and hold items do not count when determining a move's base power. If the user activates a move with variable power (Avalanche, Hidden Power, Natural Gift, Payback, Pursuit, Revenge, etc.), it gets the damage boost as long as the move's power is 60 or less. Thick Fat Users: Seel/Dewgong, Munchlax/Snorlax, Azurill/Marill/Azumarill, Miltank, Makuhita/Hariyama, Spoink/Grumpig, Spheal/Sealeo/Walrein, Purugly When the user is hit with a Fire-type or Ice-type move, damage from the move is halved. Tinted Lens Users: Venonat/Venomoth, Illumise, Yanmega When the user hits an opponent with a move that is not very effective, damage is doubled. Torrent Users: Squirtle/Wartortle/Blastoise, Totodile/Croconaw/Feraligatr, Mudkip/Marshtomp/Swampert, Piplup/Prinplup/Empoleon When the user's HP are at 33% or less, the power of any Water-type moves it uses is increased by 50%. Trace Users: Porygon/Porygon2, Ralts/Kirlia/Gardevoir When the user enters play, its ability is replaced by the same ability as one of its opponents. Truant Users: Slakoth/Slaking This Pokemon may use a move when it comes into play. The next turn, it does nothing. It may act the following turn, then does nothing, and so on. Unaware Users: Bidoof/Bibarel Any stat boosts and drops affecting the opponent, except boosts and drops to Speed, are ignored. Unburden Users: Drifloon/Drifblim If the user had a held item and does not anymore, its Speed increases by 100%. Consuming a berry or having its item Knocked Off or stolen activates this ability. This effect is lost if the user holds an item again i.e. by using Recycle or Thief. Vital Spirit Users: Mankey/Primeape, Delibird, Vigoroth The user is immune to Sleep status. It cannot use the move Rest. Outside of battle, when you encounter a wild Pokemon, it will be the highest level possible for the area you're in. For example, if an area has wild Pikachus at levels 16 and 18, you'll find level 18 Pikachus. Volt Absorb Users: Jolteon, Chinchou/Lanturn When the user is hit with an Electric-type move (including Thunder Wave) the move restores the user's HP by 25% instead of its normal effect. Water Absorb Users: Poliwag/Poliwhirl/Poliwrath/Politoed, Lapras, Vaporeon, Wooper/Quagsire, Mantyke/Mantine When the user is hit with an Water-type move, the move restores the user's HP by 25% instead of its normal effect. Water Veil Users: Goldeen/Seaking, Wailmer/Wailord The user is immune to Burns. White Smoke Users: Torkoal The opponent cannot drop the user's stats via moves or abilities. Outside of battle, encounters will wild Pokemon are less likely. Wonder Guard Users: Shedinja Only moves that are super-effective against the user can hit. All other moves miss. Moves that do fixed damage will harm the user if the move's type normally causes super-effective hits (e.g. Night Shade counts as a Ghost-type move). Damage from sandstorm or hail weather effects, Poison, Burn, or Leech Seed still hurts the user. The moves Beat Up, Bide, Doom Desire, Future Sight and Struggle will hit the user normally even if they are not super-effective. Probably due to a bug in the game, the move Fire Fang will also hit the user even if it is not weak against Fire-type moves. Wonder Guard cannot be Skill Swapped or Role Played, but can be Traced. ========================================================================== ========================================================================== Section 7) Legal Junk Thanks to Lady Duke for finding how Hustle and Vital Spirit work outside of battle, whether she realized she was doing research for this guide or not. This game guide is copyright 2007 Richard Rouse. It may not be duplicated or sold for profit without permission. This is probably the first guide I've crafted for a popular game while it was still new, so what hey, that disclaimer actually means something now. Whatcha gonna do, cry about it?
